Hair porosity refers to your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. It is typically categorized into three types: low, medium (normal), and high porosity. Each type has different characteristics and care needs.

🔹 1. Low Porosity Hair

Description:The cuticles are tightly packed and lie flat.

Moisture has a hard time entering the hair shaft.

Once moisture is in, it tends to stay.

Characteristics:

Water beads up on the hair rather than absorbing quickly.

Takes a long time to dry.

Products tend to sit on top of the hair rather than absorb.

Prone to product buildup.

Best Practices:

Use lightweight, water-based products.

Use heat (like a warm towel or steamer) to help open the cuticle for deep conditioning.

 2. Medium (Normal) Porosity Hair

Description:

Characteristics:

Accepts color and treatments easily.

Doesn’t take too long to dry.

Balanced moisture retention.

Best Practices:

Maintain with regular deep conditioning.

Avoid over-processing with heat or chemicals to keep porosity stable.


 3. High Porosity Hair

Description:The cuticles are lifted or damaged, allowing moisture to enter and leave the hair shaft quickly.

Often caused by heat styling, chemical processing, or environmental damage.


Characteristics:

Hair absorbs water quickly but also loses it quickly.

Dries very fast.

Prone to frizz and breakage.

Tangles easily.


Best Practices:

Use heavier products like creams, butters, and oils to seal in moisture.

Protein treatments can help strengthen the cuticle.
